Methanol vapour detector
I\'ve put one of these devices up on the Bay to provoke a bit of interest. Please note that the parts cost about £40 so anything under that is an absolute bargain. Auction starts at £0.99 so have some fun. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?V...0940215988

Methanol vapour detector
The bidding has started!

Methanol vapour detector - also works on ethanol. Includes everything in the photo PLUS the mains power supply. There are very slight defects in the build which are hardly noticeable but you will not be able to use more than one relay on this board. The whole kit is open source so you can reprogram the chip on an arduino uno if you want to. You can also add an external speaker via the usb slot as the onboard speaker is fairly quiet.

Use this device to make your biodiesel production safer by being able to monitor methanol vapour levels. Quite often valves/joints/welds etc on your biodiesel processor will leak without you ever knowing it causing exposure to poisonous methanol fumes which have a cumulative effect on the central nervous system turning you slowly blind. Also methanol vapour is potentially explosive and if your thermostats etc are not atex rated you could have an explosion. Always have good ventilation. The onboard relay could be used to shut down the biodiesel processor and/or sound an alarm by detecting methanol levels before they reach the explosive limit. There are four variable resistors in the device which can be used to adjust the sensor sensitivity, the zero correction, the LCD brightness and the alarm threshold.

The methalyzer was built and published as a benign attempt to help make biodiesel production generally safer and is not a commercial product as such. A limited number will be made available for sale but after that people will be encouraged to buy the PCB and build it themselves - it only requires basic soldering skills and basic understanding of electronics. The device could also be adapted to perform numerous other tasks with other sensor types.
