Methanol reseller ?
Hi all,

Do you need a license of some sort to resell methanol as it\'s a hazardous product ? i.e. buy it in bulk & resell in smaller qty\'s ? Do the storage facilities need to be checked by say, a Health & Safety governing body ?

Business Post have delivered me methanol in the past - is it courier dependant if they touch it or not ?

Thanks in advance, Neil.

I believe so - it makes sense bearing in mind the nature of the product.

Hi Neil,

You will need to make your local environmental agency office aware, in case of spillage. Also the local fire brigade will at least need a call. You would need to also consider the insurance implications as most insurance companies will impose conditions on storage and quantities.

As for couriers, very few will handle methanol in any quantity, tho some are currently re-evaluating their ADR policy. You will find smaller more localised couriers may be willing to handle it.

Unfortunately, you also have a duty of care which pasess down the line of distribution, so it is worth ensuring you sell to people who are going to use the methanol correctly and responsibly.

Hope this helps, and sorry it\'s a bit of a minefield when it comes to hazardous chemicals, especially highly flammable ones such as Methanol.

Regards

Martin @ GMP

You will also need:
You will need to employ the services of a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor, this person will also advise you on correct storage facilities and what you can and cannot do. This can be an internal appointment or outsourced here is a link to len hall\'s site

http://www.lenhallsafetyadvisor.co.uk/

ADR training minimum adr awareness training for packing chemicals etc.

Its no too complicated however it needs to be done right as im sure you will appreciate

If you serve anything to the public, you will need public liability insurance, and come under the inspections of health and safety executive. To store it and sell it as a buisiness, you will have have an environmental permit, which can cost thousands to set up. Also things like your basic buildings insurance will have to be re- assesed. This is the world we live in now.....one guy working hard, and a dozen sharing the profits. There are now too many phones, on too many desks, in too many offices.
