Finally, I have actually got started building my GL

Well, here is the proof I am actually getting somewhere........at last. Reactor is one of Jamesrl's small models. Over the next week I hope to finish it. First picture is the nude reactor...
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg66/enery8/reactor.jpg

Next with its first insulation coat.........
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg66/enery8/tank3.jpg

Then its second insulation coat......
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg66/enery8/tank2.jpg

And then its final insulation coat....
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg66/enery8/tank4.jpg

That is two coats of camping mat and one aluminium foil cover. Ought to keep the heat in!

Now I have a question, I have an external inline heater, does that (as I believe) need to be insulated as well?

YES, and do it in the same way camping mat/ foil.

Insulate everything that gets hot.

Remember when dealing with heat get an adult to do it, 'cause it'll be HOT HOT HOT, as big cook always says.

for the first layer I use buiding foam, the stuff that comes in a sheet with foil either side, and you cut it into 3" strips and place it round the drum, then add foam sheet or as is shown to hold it all together. This should allow you to heat to 60c and then not use the heater again when you add the methoxide and carry out the process, and the end temp will still be 57c.

shame to cover up jame`s great processors but needs must prevail.

I used Camping mats for the first two layers and Alububble Foil Insulation as suggested by Jamesrl when I bought my reactor from him.

You are right Steve, it is a shame to cover up Jame's work but you have to admit it does look quite pretty!;)

I can assure you that the camping mats and bubble foil do a superb job. I only use 1 layer of mat and one of foil and the lot is only 14mm thick.

If I dewater at 75c in the evening and let it settle it's still around the 60c mark the following morning, sometimes a little heat is added before brewing. I like to add methoxide at 63c.

Excellent Im scrapping my insulation plans and going down this route. When you say camping mats do you mean the lightweight roll up things you get to put your sleeping bag on? And where do you get them
Thanks

If you have a screwfix store near you they do the filters, but a bit dear at just over £2

I have used the cheap lightwieght roll up mats, a double layer, then the alububble layer. Total thickness is probably about 21mm. I got mine from a local cheap shop for about £2.50 each. The alububble was dearer tho' (from flebay). When I was in the cheap shop yesterday I noticed they were selling picnic mats with an aluminium coat one one side. If I hadn't got this far I might have used one of those as the first layer.

Hope some of this helps,

Bill

Re cheap roll up camping mats, Morrisons (local to me in Weymouth) have them at 2 for £5. I would assume all Morrisons store will be the same.

Bill. the Black end cap of the Immersion should NEVER be covered by insulation.
The rest is looking good, well done. I think it's the first one I've seen with secondary containment, it saves a lot of mess should some thing go wrong.

Pualus, there is no need for a dual condenser if you're using a Hot water tank, Bill used his for a reason.
Providing your condenser is 1m + it'll work fine, it just so happens that every 305mm/1ft of condenser will remove 1Kw of heat.

More progress, wow! So here we are.

The WVO tank is now connected and has its own 22mm Ball Valve in addition to the valve on the lower cross piece. Irish belt and braces - to be sure, to be sure! The methoxide injection system pipework is installed and the vent pipework is almost installed, just two more joints to solder. The vent system differs somewhat from the norm as the reactor is set up in the greenhouse (so that she who must be obeyed can keep an eye on me) plus the fact that it should help with the heating costs. So to the vent system. Here are some pictures, please let me have your opinions, good or bad.
Constructive criticism is always welcome.

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg66/enery8/vent3.jpg

http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg66/enery8/vent5a.jpg

This shows the current state of play.
