Made a start on my processor...

Ok, been hard at it all afternoon..

Just come in to grab a pizza and a beer! May go and make a start on the condensor if I can't get the remote from the kids lol...

So far.......

Removed coil from cylinder, right royal pain, wish I never started.. but here it is coming out a bit at a time...

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/605/19032008672.jpg

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/1971/19032008673.jpg

And finally...

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/8903/19032008674.jpg

So here is WVO settling tank on left (can't see immersion heater) along with start of processor.. Any comments?

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/9317/20032008675.jpg

Plumbing underneath..

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/8627/20032008676.jpg

And pump location..

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/1408/20032008677.jpg

Excuse poor pics - taken on phone in dim garage..

I plan on building another table to the rght and putting the Bio settling tank there, then filters to the right of that...

Any comments/suggestions??

Once I've got all the plumbing finished, I plan to lag the top of the cylinder, and finish with a circle cut to fit between the 4 posts and secured to them, for stability and to keep the insulation in place...

Oh, regarding the condenser - I am going to have a crack at the plumbers delight tomorrow, is it worth going for the max length I can get, approx 1500mm of 22mm with about 1600mm 15mm inside it, will this help meth recovery/drying?

From what I remember reading on earlier threads the condenser should be sized to the heater you are using. It works out at about 1 foot for every 1 kilowatt of heating. Therefore if you are using just the one standard 3KW heater there may be very little gain from having a larger condenser.

I thought that, but also seemed to remember that the calc was based on 100L batches - now mine will be smaller, as my cyl is only 117 L, so prob 80L batches, which, with a 3kw heater will actually increase the heat input per L - so I could theoretically benefit from a longer Condenser??

Or am I totally off course?

I believe the reasoning is: Once your BD is up to the boiling point of the methanol the rate of methanol evaporation is dependant on the heat input and largely independant of how large a batch of BD you have. The length of time for all the methanol to boil off is likely to be dependant on the batch size though.

Seems reasonable, but surely a longer condensor will cool the vapor more effectively and recover more liquid?

I'd guess that if you've cooled it sufficiently in the first three feet any extra is redundant. It won't do any harm to have a longer condenser and if you ever fit more heating you won't need to enlarge it. From what I remember you could fit two 3 ft long condensers in parallel to achive the same as one 6ft condenser.

Looking good.

Thinking of doing something like this at the top, after the venturi - where the bio enters the cylinder..

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/8023/spraybarmt3.jpg

Would this give me better drying/recovery, as well as reducing chances of the mix splashing up near the vent?

If you are doing the GL, as I think you are, drying of the bio is not a problem as you wont be water washing. I think it is a good idea though as it will aid mixing and possibly help the conversion. It can only improve the meth recovery (unless anyone knows different??)

Made my venturi tonight...

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/1359/20032008678-1.jpg

Then decided to crack on with the condensor, just on 1300mm long...

Does this look ok?

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/3865/21032008680-1.jpg

Put it on the side, intending to put sight tube up the other side..

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/1228/21032008684-1.jpg

Added a few more valves too :)

http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/3567/21032008685-1.jpg

And decided to make the feed after the venturi into a "spray bar"

Love the snakey condenser.
Make sure the 'spray bar' is in in such a way that all the oil can drain out when the pump is off.

With me being on a water meter, I am going to recirc the condensor water - Will a 45 gallon rainwater butt and a submersible pump be enough - taking cold water from the bottom of the butt, and returning it to the top, thereby allowing it to cool again?

Also, thinking of making the top part of the vent tube in speedfit pipe 15mm, as I have a good supply, and it's cheaper than copper... Would this cause probs with methoxide vapours etc?

Hi
Don't know of the effects of bio /meth fumes on speedfit but as far as the condenser recirc goes that is how I do it and it is fine. I use an old central heating pump on lowest setting and the water coming out is never hot.

IT IS ALIVE!!!!!

Done 1st "wet" test with water, initially very poor flow but this was down to rubbish blocking the outlet from the tank...

Spray bar looks to be working very well!

Video of it in action here

Venturi is a bit poor though, I only had a 10mm drill to do the centre, so I think opening it out to 12mm may help, it does suck, but not very well... Will have another bash after dinner!

If anything I would say it is a bit large at 10mm. Try it at 7 then open it up to get the best vacuum.
Test it with a clar pipe to see how high it will lift from a bucket of water.

Like the spray bar. May add one to mine.

GSM,
You need to get rid of the elbow before the venturi, they throttle the flow too much, replace it with a formed bend.

The maximum throat diameter for a CH pump is 8mm. I never exceed the throat diam on the vacuum hole.
The back pressure from your spray bar may have an adverse affect on the venturi performance. Have you worked out the total area of the holes in the bar, they need to be approx. 1 1/2 times the cross sectional area of the 22mm pipe. which is 330 sqr mm. ie. you'll need a minimum of 23 5mm holes.

Only done 10 5mm holes.... :( And the central drilling of the venturi is 10mm with the angled drilling being 5mm...

Looks like more work tomorrow morning lol...
